It’s a tool that can elevate your sound to a whole new level, but only if you know how to use it properly.

In this video, I’m going to demystify delay, showing you how to set it up, how it works, and how to make it work for you. Let’s dig in to the wonderful world of delay!

Did you know the world of guitar delay was pioneered by visionaries like Les Paul in the 1950s?

With a combination of tape loops and sound-on-sound techniques, Les Paul’s innovative mind laid the foundation for what we now call ‘delay.’

This technique was further expanded by guitarists like David Gilmour and of course The Edge from U2.

In the context of worship music, delay led to defining texture, creating atmospheric and emotional landscapes that draws the congregation into the worship experience.

From legendary tape machines to modern digital processors, delay has shaped the soundscapes of countless genres.

Understanding Delay

Let’s kick things off with the very core of delay which is the core principles and the basic parameters.

At its core delay is all about the art of replicating and manipulating a sound, creating echoes that can add depth, complexity, and emotion to your guitar tone.

This technique was further expanded by guitarists like David Gilmour and of course The Edge from U2.

In the context of worship music, delay led to defining texture, creating atmospheric and emotional landscapes that draws the congregation into the worship experience.

From legendary tape machines to modern digital processors, delay has shaped the soundscapes of countless genres.

Here’s how you can control it:

Note Sync: This is when your echoes are played in time with the beat. That means instead of just random echo’s it’s in SYNC with the beat. It sounds like this:

BPM vs. Milliseconds: Now when it comes to syncing the delays with the tempo you have two options. You can either just set the BPM and then select the note type, or you can dial in the right settings using milliseconds.

We won’t cover the milliseconds version today because thanks to technology that’s no longer needed. Instead just choose the BPM option on your delay unit and then define the sub division note type from ¼ notes to 1/8th notes and of course the famous dotted 1/8th notes.

Feedback/Repeats: This setting controls the echoes, whether it’s a single repeat or a multiple repeats

Delay Level/Mix: You have the ability to find the perfect blend between the original signal and the delayed signals.

Those are the basics and depending on the functionality of your delay pedal of choice you can also shape the repeats in a few different ways. 

For example, you can use a low cut eq to remove low frequencies for a less boomy effect:

Or you can roll off some off the highs for some added warmth.

You can also add modulation to the repeats or even adding some grit like this:

With these techniques, your guitar can evoke rich textures and emotions.

 

Section 2: Different Types of Delay

Now we just looked at the common delay parameters but it’s important to know that delays are not one-size-fits-all; they come in various flavors which adds to all the fun.

Let’s look at a couple of common delay types.

First up we have Tape Delay: Now tape delay emulates the warm and rich sound of vintage tape machines, creating echoing effects with natural degradation courtesy of wow and flutter, often adding a nostalgic touch to the music. 

In tape delay, wow and flutter refer to fluctuations in pitch and timing, caused by irregularities in the physical tape mechanism. “Wow” refers to slower, more perceptible pitch variations, while “flutter” refers to faster, more subtle changes. Together, they create a unique, organic sound that imparts a warm, vintage character to the delay effect.

Next we have Analog Delay which is known for its warm and slightly degraded repeats.  Analog delay uses analog circuitry, which gives it a more organic and vintage feel to the delayed signal, often preferred for its musical character.

On the contrary we also have Digital Delay: Digital delay offers exact replication of the input signal and is known to be precise and clear, providing a wide range of control and customization for crisp and modern-sounding echoes.

One of my favorite types of delays is Dual Delays: It’s basically two independent delay lines that offer some intricate rhythmic possibilities allowing for layered textures and complex patterns that can create a super cool sonic landscape.

Another well known delay is the Ping Pong Delay: Ping pong delay sends echoes bouncing between left and right channels in a stereo field, creating a lively and immersive spatial effect that adds depth and movement to the sound.

While it’s not that common in modern worship another favorite is the Slapback Delay which is characterized by a single, short repeat, slapback delay that produces a quick echo effect, commonly used in rockabilly and country music to give a lively, reflective character to the sound.

Then there’s Multi-Tap Delays which feature multiple delay lines or “taps”. Multi-tap delay offers intricate rhythmic patterns and ambient textures, providing a wide sonic palette for creative experimentation.

There’s more but these are the main types of delays that have defined genres, from vintage rock to modern worship.

 

Section 3: Special Delay Techniques

Now let’s explore some special techniques to get even more out of delay.

First we have Delay Ducking: This is basically a dynamic play with the volume control. 

Ducking lowers the delay signal while you’re playing and then increases it when you stop playing, allowing for clarity and impact.

Reverse Delay: This is a cool effect you can use to get some surreal, psychedelic textures by reversing the delayed signal, creating a dreamlike ambiance that truly stands out.

Filtered Delay: Filtered delay applies filters to shape your delayed signal creatively. From bright echoes to dark, muffled repeats, the possibilities are endless.

 

Section 4: Common Mistakes and Solutions

As you can see the possibilities for shaping your tone with delay is truly endless when you combine all these elements together.

But you need to be careful because delay can be tricky if used incorrectly. Let’s check out a couple of common delay mistakes that might cause some tonal chaos for you.

The biggest mistake is overusing Delay: Remember, more isn’t always better. Too much delay can muddy your sound; so sometimes less is better.

Not correctly syncing your delay to the BPM is another common mistake which leads to disjointed echoes that clash with your rhythm and overall feel of the song.

So if you’re using a rhythmic delay, make sure it’s properly synced with the rest of the band and be sure to use the right subdivision to get the sound you’re after.

Not watching your Feedback and Mix can also cause some problems.

To keep things nice and tight and to avoid overwhelming repeats make sure you find the ideal balance between the amount of repeats and the volume of the repeats.

Follow these guidelines and you’ll master delay’s creative potential as you dive into this awesome world of sonic exploration.
